David Schuman, a graduate of Stanford (BA 1966), University of Chicago (PhD English 1974), and University of Oregon Law School (JD 1984), served as judicial clerk to the Honorable Hans Linde of the Oregon Supreme Court. In 1987, he joined the University of Oregon Law faculty, but left in 1997 to serve as Deputy Attorney General. After a brief return to teaching in 2001, he was appointed by Governor John Kitzhaber to serve on the Oregon Court of Appeals, winning subsequent elections in 2002 and 2008. After he retired from the bench in 2014, he returned to teaching until his death in 2019.
Sharon Schuman earned degrees in English from Stanford (BA 1967), San Francisco State (MA 1968) and University of Chicago (PhD 1975). She taught literature at Deep Springs College, Willamette University, and University of Oregon. Author of Freedom and Dialogue in a Polarized World, she gives presentations and workshops about cultivating dialogic freedom to reduce polarization.
